what are elements? substances that can't be seperated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
what is a pure substance? a sample of matter either a single element or a single compound that has definite chemical and physical properties
what are the properties of elements? Melting point, density, conductivities, and reactivity
what are metals? elements that are shiny and that conducts heat and electricity well
what are nonmetals? elements that conduct heat and electricity poorly
what are metalloids? elements that have properties of both metals and nonmetals
what is a compound? a substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined
what are the properties of compounds? melting point, density, reactivity, and color
what is a mixture? a combination of 2 or more substances that are NOT chemically combined
what is a solution? an even mixture (homogeneous) of 2 or more substances.(when the the solute dissolves in the solvent)
what is the solute? in a solution, the substance that dissolves in the solvent
what is the solvent? in a solution, the substance that the solute dissolves into
What are some examples of solutions? dry air, soft drinks, antifreeze, salt, and water
what is alloy? solid solutions of metals or nonmetals dissolved in metals (when a solid dissolves into a solid)
what is concentration? how much of the solute is in the solvent
what is solubility? the ability of 1 substance to dissolve in another at a given temperature or pressure
what is suspension? a mixture where the particles settle after a while
what is a colloid? a solution in which the particles don't move or separate (gelatin, whipped cream, mayonnaise
