IP Terms

TermDefinition
Access Copyright Is a non-profit organization that ensures fair compensation to those of whom works are copied from.
Copyright Is the ownership of intellectual property which includes the right to reproduce the material.
Intellectual Property The ownership of creations of the mind for which exclusive rights are recognized. e.g copyright, trademarks, patents.
Royalties Payments made by a licensee to a licensor for the use of an asset or intellectual property.
Trade-Marks A recognizable sign, design or expression which identifies products or services of a particular source from those of others.
Public Domain Works that belong to the public that can be used free of charge and do not require written permission from the author/creator.
Moral Rights The right of the creator of a work to preserve the integrity of that work to be free from alteration, distortion, or mutilation even if that work is given to be used by another.
Performing Rights The right to perform music in public. Copyright law demands that payment be made to the composer and publisher unless those rights are obtained from the copyright holder.
Plagiarism Is this use of another's language, thoughts, ideas and expressions and representing them as your own.
Fair Dealing Is the limitation and exception to the exclusive right granted by copyright law i.e Using another's work for a different purpose.
Patent Is a form of intellectual property that grants exclusive rights to an inventor for a limited period of time.
Blanket License Allows TV, Radio, or other forms of distributors to play material without having to acquire the rights every time that material is presented.
