Bio chapter 7 vocab

QuestionAnswer
Cell- basic units of life
Cell Theory- fundamental theory of biology that states cells are the smallest base of life
Cell Membrane- thin flexible barrier surrounding the outside of the cell
Nucleus- large membrane enclosed structure that contains DNA, and controls the cell
Eukaryote- cells that enclose their DNA in nuclei
Prokaryote- cells that don’t enclose their DNA in nuclei
Cytoplasm- portion of the cell outside the nucleus
Organelle- different structures within the cell
Vacuole- large sac like membranes that act like trash cans
Lysosome- small organelles filled with enzymes
Cytoskeleton- protein filaments that are set up to give the cell its shape
Centriole- help organize cell division
Ribosome- small particles of RNA in the cytoplasm
Endoplasmic Reticulum- internal membrane where lipid components are assembled
Golgi Apparatus- flattened membranes that move proteins
Chloroplast- solar powered organelle that produces food for plants
Mitochondrion- organelle that converts sugars and proteins into energy
Cell wall- strong thick membrane that acts a structure
Lipid Bilayer- strong structure that protects cells from the outside
Selectively Permeable- the cell can pick and choose what substances can pass through the membrane.
Diffusion- when particles move from high pressure to low pressure
Facilitated diffusion- when particles cant pass through the membrane but go through small passages
Aquaporin- water channels in the membrane that allow water to freely pass through it
Osmosis- the diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane
Isotonic- "same strength"
Hypertonic- "above strength"
Hypotonic- "below strength"
Osmotic pressure- the net movement of water in or out of a membrane produces force
Homeostasis- constant internal physical and chemical conditions
Tissue- a group of similar cells that performs a particular function
Organ- many groups of tissues sometimes come together to perform a function
Organ system- a group of organs that come together to perform a task
Receptor- a membrane type part of a cell that receives signal

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
