Lesson 2 Moving through the digestive tract

| Peristalsis | Process by which food passes through the digestive system. |
| Mechanical Digestion | Tearing and chewing of food. |
| Chemical Digestion | Breaks down the chemical bonds in nutrients. |
| Mucus | Digestive tract is lined with this slippery substance. |
| Digestive Tract | 8-10 meters long |
| Sphincter | Muscle that controls passage of food from one area to another. |
| Duodenum | First 25cm of small intestine; most digestion occurs here. |
| Large Intestine | Undigested waste is all that remains--absorbs water and electrolytes. |
| Feces | Semi-solid waste that is made up of 1/3 dead bacteria. |
| Flatus | Living bacteria feed on undigested waste and often produce this gas. |
| Rectum | Feces remains here until it is eliminated from the body. |
