Brain defs HW 2

Another attempt of learning definitions of nervous and neuroanatomical systems

TermDefinition
Cerebrum - Largest and most recognisable part of the brain. It is responsble for the elements of the nervous system that are associated with being "human", including thought, imagination and reasoning. -Contains the cerebral cortex, involved in "higher" function.
Cerebellum - It is responsible for the coordination of movement and posture. - Neurones carry impulses from this part of the brain to others, such as the motor area.
Medulla oblongata - Controls non skeletal muscles, and is effectively in control of the autonomic nervous system. - Contains regulatory centres for many processes, such as:The cardiac centre, regulating heart rate and the respiratory centre, controls aspects of breathing.
Peripheral nervous system - Consists of all the sensory and motor neurones outside the central nervous system. Connecting the receptors to effectors in the CNS.
Endocrine system - A system that consists of endocrine glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream and of endocrine channels that drain the build up of phagocytes in the blood.
Sensory areas - An area of the cerebral cortex that receives impulses indirectly from receptors.
Association areas -An area of the cerebral cortex that compares current impulses being received with previous experiences in order to interpret the meaning and there for generate an appropriate response.
Motor area - An area of the cerebral cortex that sends signals to effectors.
Parasympathetic neurone Part of the autonomic nervous system that is most active during sleep and relaxation, have pre-ganglionic neurones that vary considerably in length, have post ganglionic neurones that secrete acetylcholine to the effector and decrese HR,BR and sex drive.
Somatic neurone - a motor neurone that carries impulses from the CNS to skeletal muscles under conscious control.
Autonomic neurone - A motor neurone that carries impulses from the CNS to muscles that are not under voluntary control, E.G smooth and cardiac.
Sympathetic neurone - Part of the autonomic nervous system that is most active in times of stress, have pre ganglionic neurones that are very short, post ganglionic neurones secrete norodrenalin that increases HR,BP,BR and orgasum.
Hypothalamus - Part of the brain that controls the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine glands.
Fight or flight response - Refers to the coordinated response of animals to situations of perceived danger, the effects of nervous responses and hormones has a dramatic effect. Making it ready for action as hiding or confrontation.
Central nervous system -Consists of the brain and the spinal cord.
Antagonistic nervous system - Part of the autonomic nervous system. - Consists of the sympathetic and parasympathetic neurones. - Is often called this as the two nervous systems opposes each other.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
