cuticle a waxy or fatty watertight layer on the external wall of epidermal cells.
stoma one of many openings in a leaf or a stem of a plant that enable gas exchange to occur.
guard cell one of specialized cells that border a stoma and regulate gas exchange.
vascular system a conducting systen of tissues that transport water and other materials in plants or in animals.
nonvascular plant the 3 groups of plants (liverworts, hormworts, & moses) that lack specialized conducting tissues and true roots, steams, and leaves.
vascular plant plant that has a vascular system composed of xylem and phlomespecialized tissues that conduct materials from one part of the plant to another.
seed a plant embryo that is enclosed in a protective coat.
embryo an organism in an early stage of development of plants and animals; in humans, a developing individual is referred to as an embryo from the second through the eighth week of pregnancy.
seed plant plant that produces seeds.
flower the reproductive structures of a flowering plant that usually consist of a pistil, stamens, petals, and sepals.
phloem tissue that conducts food (sugars, amino acids, and mineral nutrients) in vascular plants.
xylem tissue in which hard-walled cells transport water & mineral nutrients.
shout the portion of a plant that grows mostly above the ground; includes the stems & leaves.
root the mainly underground organ of vascular plants that holds plants in place & absorbs & stores water & minerals from the soil.
meristem a region of undifferentiated plant cells that are capable of dividing & developing into specialized plant tissue.
rhizoid a rootlike structure in nonvascular plants, such as moses or liverworts, that holds the plants in place & acids in absorption.
rhizome cell organelle composed of RNA & protein
frond leaf of a fern or palm.
cone in plants, a seed-bearing structure.
gymnosperm woody vascular seed plant whose seeds are not enclosed by an ovary or fruit.
angiosperm flowering plant that produces seeds within fruit.
fruit mature plant ovary.
endosperm triploid (3n) tissue that develops in the seeds of amniosperms & that provides food for a developing embryo.
monocot monocotyledonous; a plant tht produces seeds tht have only orecotyledon.
dicot a dictotyledonous plant; an organism tht has 2 cotyledous, netvenation, & flower plants in groups of 4 or 5.
regetative part any nonreprodutive part of a plant.
cereal any grass tht produces grains tht can be used for food, such as rice, wheat.
grain the edible seed or seedlike fruit of a cereal grass.
