QuestionAnswer
What do we use to measure the mass of an object? balance
The mass of an object is measured in what? grams
How do we find the volume of a regular-shaped object? V= l x w x h (volume = length x width x height)
How do we measure volume? cu. cm or cm3
How do we find the volume of an irregular-shaped object? water displacement method
What do we place the object t in when measuring by the water displacement method? graduated cylinder
How is the volume determined in the water displacement method? the amount of water that is moved (displaced) is equal to the object's volume
How do we measure the volume of an irregular-shaped object? in milliliters, mL
What is the amount of mass within a certain volume called? density
Three ways we measure density? grams per cu. cm g/cu.cm g/gm3
What is the density of water? 1.0g?cu.cm 1.0g/cm3 1.0g/mL
To find density you........ divide mass by volume D=m/v
What describes the ability of an object to float in a fluid? buoyancy
What are the 2 types of fluid used to measure buoyancy? liquid or gas (ex. air)
When an object is pushed down into a fluid of greater density what does the fluid's buoyant force do? it pushes the object back toward the surface
What properties of matter help us to tell substances apart? physical properties
What materials allow heat or electricity to pass through easily? conductors
Name a good conductor? metals- aluminum, copper, gold, silver
What material do not allow heat or electricity to pass through easily? insulators
Name some good insulators? glass, plastic, rubber, styrofoam
Anything that has mass and volume (takes up space) is called? matter
