Earth Science Vocabulary Set 6

TermDefinition
Element A chemical substance that has all the same type of atoms. These substances can be found on the Periodic Table.
Basalt A relatively heavy igneous rock that makes up most of the material in oceanic crust.
Granite A relatively lightweight igneous rock that makes up most of the material in continental crust.
Soil Ground surface which is made of a mixture of materials such as sand, silt, clay and rock particles as well as organic material, air and water.
Stratification The process by which materials form themselves into layers.
Outcrop Rock or layers of rock that are exposed and visible at the earth’s surface.
Permeable Allowing the passage of a liquid or gas through a material.
Porosity The amount of empty space within a material compared to the amount of total material. This is often used to indicate the amount of space between grains of soil.
Aquifer A porous and permeable body of rock that can supply considerable quantities of groundwater.
Water Table The top surface of groundwater.
