| Term | Definition |

| Element | A chemical substance that has all the same type of atoms. These substances can be found on the Periodic Table. |
| Basalt | A relatively heavy igneous rock that makes up most of the material in oceanic crust. |
| Granite | A relatively lightweight igneous rock that makes up most of the material in continental crust. |
| Soil | Ground surface which is made of a mixture of materials such as sand, silt, clay and rock particles as well as organic material, air and water. |
| Stratification | The process by which materials form themselves into layers. |
| Outcrop | Rock or layers of rock that are exposed and visible at the earth’s surface. |
| Permeable | Allowing the passage of a liquid or gas through a material. |
| Porosity | The amount of empty space within a material compared to the amount of total material. This is often used to indicate the amount of space between grains of soil. |
| Aquifer | A porous and permeable body of rock that can supply considerable quantities of groundwater. |
| Water Table | The top surface of groundwater. |
