| Evaporation | The process of changing from a liquid to a vapor or gas. |
| Condensation | The process of changing from a vapor or gas into a liquid. |
| Precipitation | The process in which water from the atmosphere returns to the Earth’s surface |
| Transpiration | A process in which plants release water vapor into the atmosphere. |
| Sublimation | The process by which ice or snow changes directly to water vapor without changing into a liquid first. |
| Infiltration | The entrance of water into the soil or ground. |
| Percolation | The downward movement of water through layers of soil. |
| Runoff | Water that moves across the Earth’s surface instead of sinking into the ground. |
| Continental Divide | An imaginary line defined by the fact that water poured on one side of it would ultimately flow to the ocean on one side of the continent, while water poured on the other side of the line would flow into the ocean on the other side of the continent. |
| Wetland | An area of water soaked land, which contains plants specially adapted to water soaked environments. Examples include: Swamps, bogs, marshes, fens and estuaries. |
