| Sensory areas | The regions of the cerebral cortex that recieve impulses from the sensory nerves. |
| Somatic neurone | A motor neurone forming a direct synapse with striated muscle fibers via a motor end plate. |
| Fight or flight response | An automatic bodilly response to stress which prepares the body for action. |
| Cerebellum | The part of the brain at the back of the skull in vertebrates. Its function is to coordinate and regulate muscular activity. |
| Association areas | A region of the brain that connects sensory and motor areas, and thought to be concerned with higher mental activities. |
| Autonomic neurone | Neurones associated with the ANS, involved in controlling automatic response, e.g. coordination of circulatory system. |
| Central nervous system | The brain and spinal cord. It has control over the coordination of the whole nervous system. |
| Medulla oblongata | A section of the brain stem that contains centres for the control of various unconscious bodilly functions via the autonomic nervous system. |
| Motor area | An area of the cerebral cortex within which the neurones are responsible for driving motor functions. |
| Sympathetic neurone | Neurones involved in the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) which is one of three major parts of the autonomic nervous system. |
| Peripheral nervous system | The sensory and motor neurones connecting the central nervous systemto the sensors and effectors around the body. |
| Hypothalamus | A portion of the brain that contains various receptors that monitor the blood. also involved in controlling the autonomic nervous system. |
| Antagonistic | Working agianst each other ina pair. |
| Endocrine system | A system of glands that secrete hormones involved in the control of bodily matabolic activity directly into the blood. |
| Parasympathetic neurone | Neurones involved in the parasympathetic nervous system which controls things such as sleep, digestion and relaxing of muscles. |
| Nervous system | The network of nerve cells and fibers that transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body. |
