| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Continental | A dry air mass that forms over land |
| Front | A front is a transition zone between two air masses |
| Occluded | Cut off, like when a warm air mass is stuck between two cold air masses |
| Cyclone | Winds rotating inward to an area of low atmospheric pressure |
| Anticyclone | A weather system with high atmospheric pressure at its center |
| Storm | A violent disturbance of the atmosphere with strong winds and usually rain, thunder, lightning, or snow |
| Thunderstorm | A storm with thunder and lightning and typically also heavy rain or hail |
| Hurricane | A storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean |
| Storm Surge | A rising of the sea as a result of atmospheric pressure changes and wind associated with a storm |
| Meteorologist | a specialist who studies processes in the earth's atmosphere that cause weather conditions |
| Isobar | A line on a map connecting points having the same atmospheric pressure at a given time or on average over a given period |
| Isotherm | A line on a map connecting points having the same temperature at a given time or on average over a given period |
| Humidity | A quantity representing the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere or a gas |
| Relative humidity | The amount of water vapor present in air expressed as a percentage of the amount needed for saturation at the same temperature |
| Psychrometer | A hygrometer consisting of a wet-bulb and a dry-bulb thermometer |
| Continental | Water that collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it |
| Dew Point | The atmospheric temperature (varying according to pressure and humidity) below which water droplets begin to condense and dew can form |
| Cirrus | Cloud forming wispy filamentous tufted streaks at high altitude |
| Cumulus | a globular cloud |
| Cyclone | a large dark low cloud |
| Anticyclone | A body of air with horizontally uniform levels of temperature, humidity, and pressure |
| Storm | A warm air that forms in the tropics and has low air pressure |
| Polar | A cold air mass that forms in the north and has a high air pressure |
| Maritime | A humid air mass that forms over oceans |
