| Term | Definition |

| Matter | Any substance that takes up space and has mass. The three common phases of matter are solid, liquid and ges; the fourth state of matter is plasma |
| Solid | A phase of matter that can be seen and felt. It has a definite size, shape, color and texture |
| Liquid | A phase of matter with no definite size of shape that takes the shape of the container |
| Gas | A phase of matter with no definite size, shape or texture. It fills its container quickly because its molecules travel rapidly |
| Evaporation | The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
| Condensation | The process by which a gas changes to a liquid as it cools |
| Plasma | A stage of mattter relating to highly ionized gases |
