Weather

The vocabulary about weather

TermDefinition
Humidity The measure of the amount of water vapor in the air.
Relative Humidity The percentage of water vapor in the air compared to the highest amount of vapor the air can contain at a specific temperature.
Psychrometer The instrument used to measure relative humidity.
Condensation The process in which water vapor condenses to make clouds.
Dew point The temperature that water vapor condenses.
Cirrus A type of cloud that is made from ice crystals, forms at high levels , about 6 km, and is feathery.
Cumulus A type of cloud that is fluffy, forms about 2 km above ground, which may stretch until 18 km tall, and is common on sunny days.
Stratus A type of cloud that is spread out and may cover most of the sky, and is gray. As they thicken, they may produce a form of precipitation.
Air mass A body of air that is similar in temperature and humidity
Tropical The type of air mass that is warm.
Polar The type of air mass that is cold.
Maritime The type of air mass that is humid
Continental The type of air mass that is dry
Front The boundary where two air masses meet.
Occluded A font that occurs when warm air mass is trapped between two cold air masses.
Cyclone A twirling center of low pressure air.
Anticyclone A twirling center of high pressure air.
Storm A massive disturbance in the atmosphere.
Thunderstorm A type of storm that a type of precipitation may come from. Thunderstorms come from cumulonimbus clouds come from.
Hurricane A fast tropical cyclone that begins over warm ocean waters.
Storm surge a mound of water that goes to the coast of where the hurricane landed.
Meteorologists People who study the atmosphere, including the weather and climate.
Isobar Lines on a weather map that connect the points where air pressure is equal
Isotherm Lines on a weather map that connect the points where temperature is the same.
