| Geologic Time Scale | The division of Earth's history based on the appearance or disappearance of organisms. |
| Eons | Longest subdivisions of time. |
| Eras | Long time divisions marked by major, striking, and worldwide changes in the types of fossils present. |
| Periods | Units of geologic time characterized by types of life existing worldwide at the time. |
| Epochs | Shortest units of time for Earth's geologic history. |
| Mesozoic Era | Age of the dinosaurs. |
| Precambrian Time | Name of the longest time period in the geologic time scale |
| Paleozoic Era | Reptiles, amphibians, and fish appear during this time period. |
| Cenozoic Era | Time period when mammals and humans appear in the geologic time scale. |
| Organic Evolution | Change in species which allows their survival over time. |
| Species | A group of organisms that normally reproduces only with other members of their group. |
| Natural Selection | Process by which organisms with characteristics that are suited to environment have a better chance of survival and ability to reproduce than those without those traits. |

| Artificial Selection | Humans look for the desired characteristics and breed the two individuals in order to enhance that desired trait. |
