| phase | a stage in a process |
| pure | having either two dominant or two recessive alleles for a trait, not mixure of both |
| hybrid | having both the dominant and the recessive allele for a trait ( also known as heterozygous ) |
| mitosis | cell replication process that produces new cells with full sets of chromosome, makes new working cells |
| meiosis | cell replication process that produces new cells with 1/2 sets of chromosome, makes cells used in replication |
| replicate | to copy, duplicate |
| trait | a characteristic |
| chromosome | body in the nucleus of a cell that is made up of DNA and holds genetic information |
| DNA | a substance that wraps together to form chromosomes and is associated with the transmission of genetic information |
| dominant | a trait that will show up in an individual if the individual has only one allele for the trait, it is the stronger trait |
| recessive | a trait that will show up in an individual, only if the individual has two alleles for the trait, it is the weaker trait |
| haploid | a cell with half the normal number of chromosomes |
| diploid | a cell with the normal number of chromosomes |
| mutation | changes or variations in the information on genes |
| gene | material on a chromosome that determines what traits an organism will have |
