Human Bio assessment

Human Bio assessment term 1 2013

QuestionAnswer
How do fungi recieve the nutrients they require to survive and link to the cycling of nutrients in the environment? Feed via extracellular digestion. Enzymes are released outside the hyphae and food is broken down into monomers. Monomers produced travel from a region of high concentration into the hyphae where they are in short supply as they are being used to respire.
Q1 continues By breaking down dead, decaying organic material, containing carbon/ nitrogen using it to build structures/release energy for respiration. Nutrients can then be recycled through food chains. fungi excrete useable nutrients, plant absorb through soil.
Compare and contrast the 3 micro organisms Fungi- furry (hyphae), living, sexual (zygospores), assexual- spores in sporangia, hard cell wall. Bacteria- slimy, living, soft cell wall, cell membrane, guts cytoplasm, nucleus. Virus- not living, protein sheath, tube, disordered genetic material.
What is the process involved in the culturing of micro organisms from a swab of someone's throat? Sterile nutrient agar. Two sterile plates. Swab throat. Lift lid up and 'zig' over surface of agar without digging agar. Close lid. Incubate both plates at 37 degrees.
