TermDefinition
Pseudopods Temporary cytoplasmic projections.
Amoeboid Movement Cytoplasm of the cell streams into the pseudopod and the rest of the cell follows.
Food Vacuole Small captivity in the cytoplasm that stores food.
Trichocysts Very small, bottle shaped structures which are used for defense.
Macronucleus "Working Library" of genetic information.
Micronucleus Contains a "Reserve Copy" of all the cell's genes.
Cilia Short hair-like projections similar to flagella.
Gullet An indentation in one side of the organisms vacuoles that form at its base.
Anal Pore Waste materials emptied into the environment.
Contractile Vacuoles Cavities in the cytoplasm that are specialized to collect water.
Conjugation Exchange of genetic material wit other individuals.
Accessory Pigments Absorve light at different wavelengths than chlorophyll.
Eyespot Helps the organism to fine sunlight to power photosyntheses.
Pellicle Intricate cell membrane in Euglenas.
Phytoplankton Population of small, photosynthetic organisms found near the surface of the ocean.
Phycobilins Absorb blue light and enable red algae to live deeper in the ocean.
Filaments Cells are stacked like aluminum cans placed end to end.
Alteration of Generations Algae switch back and forth between haploid and diploid.
Gametophytes Gamete-producing plants.
Spores Haploid reproductive cells.
Sporophyte Spore-producing organism.
Cellular Slime Molds Remain distinct-separated by cell membranes during every phase of it;s life.
Acellular Slime Molds Pass through a stage which their cells fuse to form large cells with many nuclei.
Fruiting Body Slender reproductive structure that produces spores.
Hyphae Thin filaments produced by water molds.
Zoosporangia Spore cases.
Antheridium Produces male nuclei.
