SOL 3.8 Patterns and Cycles

What causes the seasons? Because of the tilt of the Earth as it revolves around the sun
What effect does the gravity of the moon have on the Earth? It causes the tides.
If one side of Earth is having day, what is happening on the other side? It is having night.
What do you call the different shapes the moon takes on during the month? The phases of the moon
About how long does it take for the moon to complete one lunar cycle? About 28 days, or roughly one month
What season is in January? Winter
What is the imaginary line that Earth spins on called? Its axis
What would happen to Earth if we had no Sun? We need the heat and light of the Sun, so it would be too cold and dark to live on Earth.
What causes the Earth to have night and day? The rotation of the Earth
Why are there 365 and 1/4 days in one year? Because it takes that long for the Earth to complete one revolution around the sun.
What does it mean to revolve? To make a path around or orbit
What 2 motions is the Earth doing at the same time? It rotates (spins) on its axis and revolves (makes a path) around the sun.
Why do we have seasons? Because the Earth is tilted as it revolves around the sun.
How long does it take for the Earth to make one complete revolution around the Sun? 365 and 1/4 days or a year
How many high tides and low tides are there in one day? 2 high tides and 2 low tides
Why does the Sun seem to be moving across the sky? The sun isn't moving across the sky, the Earth is rotating.
What would happen if the Earth rotated faster or slower? The length of the day would get shorter if it rotated faster or longer if it rotated slower.
What is at the center of our Solar System? The Sun
It takes 365 days to go around the sun. If Earth took 730 days, what would happen to the seasons? The seasons would be longer. Instead of 3 months each, they would be 6!
What is the Quarter Moon sometimes called? The Half Moon
Put these moon phases in the correct order starting with the new moon: full moon, last quarter, first quarter, new moon new moon, first quarter, full moon, last quarter
When we see the whole face of the moon, what is it called? The full moon
