Types of Pain

| Deep somatic pain | Deep Somatic Pain: Pain that originates in the muscles or bones |
| Visceral pain | Visceral Pain: Pain that originates in body organs |
| cutaneous/superficial pain | Cutaneous or Superficial pain: Pain that originates in the skin and subcutaneous tissue |
| referred pain | Referred pain: Pain that is felt in other areas other than those stimulated. Occurs most often with damage or injury to visceral organs |
| neuralgia pain | Neuralgia: Sharp, spasm like pain along the course of one or more nerves |
| causalgia pain | Causalgia: A form of neuralgia. Severe, burning pain associated with injury to a |
| phantom limb pain | Phantom Limb Pain: Pain or discomfort perceived by the person to be occurring in an extremity that has been amputated. |
| malignant pain | malignant Pain: pain caused by cancer than has both acute and chronic pain qualities |
