Earth Science Chapter 29

TermDefinition
aphelion When a planet is farthest away from the sun
astronomical unit Average distance between the sun and the earth. Used as a comparison to measure large distances in space
eccentricity elliptical (elongated/oblong) orbit
perihelion When a planet is close to the sun
retrograde motion When a planet appears to move in the opposite direction in the sky.
gas giant planet Planets beyond Mars that are large, more gaseous and lack solid surfaces
precession Wobble in the Earth's rotational axis. Takes about 26,000 years to go through 1 wobble
terrestrial planet 4 inner planets with rocky surfaces
belt Low, warm dark colored clouds found on gas giants
zone High, cool, light colored clouds found on the gas giants
asteroid Leftovers from the formation of the solar system that orbit the sun between the planets.
coma Head of a comet
comet small icy bodies with very elongated (eccentric) orbits that enter our solar system, travel around the sun and return from where they came.
meteor streak of light that is created when a meteoroid falls through the atmosphere. (falling star)
meteor shower many pieces from a comet that burn up as they enter Earth's atmosphere. Occurs as Earth's orbit intersects a comet's orbit
meteorite a meteoroid that hits the ground
meteoroid Interplanetary material(material from space) that falls into Earth's atmosphere.
nucleus Small solid core of a comet
planetesimal Accumulation of many small bodies left over from the formation of the solar system, creating a small "planet"
