Weathering and Erosion unit vocabulary

| Weathering | The chemical and physical processes that break down rock at the Earth's surface. |
| Chemical Weathering | The process that breaks down rock through chemical changes. |
| Mechanical Weathering | The type of weathering in which rock is physically broken into smaller pieces. |
| Erosion | The process that moves rocks. |
| Load | Amount of sediment carried by a stream. |
| Deposition | Process by which sediments are laid down in new locations. |
| Alluvial Fan | Deposit formed where a stream leaves a mountain range. |
| Delta | Sediments deposited at the mouth of a large river that flows into a lake or ocean. |
| Runoff | Moving water that moves over the Earth's surface. |
| Tributary | A stream that flows into a larger stream. |
| Glacier | A large mass of ice that moves slowly over land. |
| Valley Glacier | A long narrow glacier that forms when snow and ice build up high in a mountain valley. |
| Continental Glacier | A glacier that covers much of a continent. |
| Abrasion | Wearing away of rock. |
| Permeable | Weathering due to water seeping into air spaces in rock. |
| Ice Wedging | Rocks broken by frozen water. |
| Plucking | The process by which glaciers pick up rocks. |
