Weathering and Erosion unit vocabulary

TermDefinition
Weathering The chemical and physical processes that break down rock at the Earth's surface.
Chemical Weathering The process that breaks down rock through chemical changes.
Mechanical Weathering The type of weathering in which rock is physically broken into smaller pieces.
Erosion The process that moves rocks.
Load Amount of sediment carried by a stream.
Deposition Process by which sediments are laid down in new locations.
Alluvial Fan Deposit formed where a stream leaves a mountain range.
Delta Sediments deposited at the mouth of a large river that flows into a lake or ocean.
Runoff Moving water that moves over the Earth's surface.
Tributary A stream that flows into a larger stream.
Glacier A large mass of ice that moves slowly over land.
Valley Glacier A long narrow glacier that forms when snow and ice build up high in a mountain valley.
Continental Glacier A glacier that covers much of a continent.
Abrasion Wearing away of rock.
Permeable Weathering due to water seeping into air spaces in rock.
Ice Wedging Rocks broken by frozen water.
Plucking The process by which glaciers pick up rocks.
