Chapter 7 Vocab.

QuestionAnswer
Cell Basic unit of life
Cell theory Fundamental concept of biology
Nucleus Large membrane-enclosed structure that contains the cell's genetic material in the form of DNA
Eukaryotes Cells that contain nuclei
Prokaryotes Cell that do not contain nuclei
Organelles little organs
Cytoplasm Portion of the cell outside the nucleus
Nuclear envelope Composed of two membranes
Chromatin Granular material you can see in the nucleus
Chromosomes When a cell is divided
Nucleolus Where the assembly of ribosomes begins
Ribosomes Small particles of RNA and protein found through out the cytoplasm
Endoplasmic reticulum Site where lipid components of the cell membrane are assembled, along with proteins and other materials that are exported from the cell
Golgi apparatus Modifies proteins and other materials from the endoplasmic reticulum for storage in the cell.
Lysosomes Small organelles filled with enzymes
Vacuoles Store materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates.
Mitochondria Organelles that convert the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use.
Chloroplasts Organelles that capture the energy from sunlight and convert it into chemical energy
Cytoskeleton Network of protein filaments that helps the cell to maintain its shape.
Centrioles Located near the nucleus to help organize cell division
Cell membrane Cell wall
Cell wall Strong supporting layer around the membrane
Lipid bilayer Composition of nearly all cell membrane
Concentration Mass of solute in a given volume of solution or mass/volume
Diffusion As a particle moves
Equilibrium COncentration of the solute is the same throughout a system
Osmosis Diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane
Isotonic Same strength
Hypertonic Above strength
Hypotonic Below strength
Facilitated diffusion Molecules that cannot diffuse across the cell membrane's lipid bilayer on there own
Active transport Cells sometimes must move materials in the opposite direction against a concentration difference
Endocytosis Process of taking material into the cell by means of infoldings, or pockets, of the cell membrane
Phagocytosis Cell eating
Pinocytosis Fill with liquid and pinch off to form vacuoles within the cell
Exocytosis Membrane of the vacuole surrounding the material fuses with the cell membrane, forcing the contents out of the cell
Cell specialization Cells throughout an organism can develop in different ways to perform different tasks
Tissue Group of similar cells that perform a particular function
Organ Many groups of tissue work together as an organ
Organ system completes a series of specialized tasks.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
