Ecosystem Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| producer | An organism such as plants that make their own food. |
| consumer | An organism that eats other organisms to get energy. Consumers can not make their own food. |
| food chain | The transfer of energy in the form of food from one organism to another |
| organism | A living thing |
| ecosystem | An area in which living and nonliving things interact. |
| herbivore | A consumer that eats plants to get its energy. |
| omnivore | A consumer that eats both meat and plants to get its energy. |
| carnivore | A consumer that eats other animals (meat) to get its energy |
| interdependent | Organisms that depend on each other to survive. |
| food web | A collection of food chains |
| scavenger | An organism that eats dead or dying things such as an isopod or a snail. |
| photosynthesis | The process that plants use to make food which uses water, The leaves of a plant take in carbon dioxide and sunlight. The plant also takes in nutrients and water from the soil to help with photosynthesis. |
| decomposer | A consumer that breaks down dead plants and animals. The nutrients in the organism return to the soil. |
| habitat | A place where an organism lives. |
| predator | An animal that hunts and kills for food. |
| examples of decomposers | fungi, mushrooms, bacteria |
| examples of producers | trees, ferns, dandelions, grass, corn |
| three things both plants and animals need to survive | air, water, energy or nutrients |
| What do arrows in a food chain show? | The flow of energy |
| pollutant | Anything that can harm organisms when too much is released in an ecosystem. |
| How is fertilizer a pollutant? | When too much fertilizer is used it can run off into a nearby water source and cause aquatic plants to overgrow. This causes a loss of nutrients in the water and will eventually kill the plants which adds more bacteria to the water. |
| How is acid rain a pollutant? | When we use lots of energy, we are burning fossil fuels such as coal. When too much is released into the air through factories, cars, etc. it can cause acid rain which harms plants and buildings over time. |
| How is road salt a pollutant? | Road salt is put on roads to melt ice and prevent cars from sliding on the ice, but too much road salt can be harmful to plants and animals that are sensitive to it. |
| sun/sunlight | provides energy for plants to use in making food. |
| What are some of the nonliving parts of an ecosystem? | air, water, soil |
| energy | refers to food energy that is transferred in a food chain from organism to organism. |
| bacteria | A decomposer that breaks down dead organisms. The nutrients return to the soil |
| oxygen | plants give off oxygen |
| carbon dioxide | plants take in carbon dioxide or CO2 in order to help them make food through the process of photosynthesis. |
| environment | the condition of the air, water, minerals, organisms, and all other external factors surrounding and affecting a given organism at any time. |
| nutrient | a chemical that an organism needs to live and grow. Ex. plants get nutrients from the soil used to help the plant make food. |
| nonliving | things that are not alive that are in an environment such as air, water, rocks, soil, etc. |
| acid rain | rain that is mixed with a lot of pollutants caused by the burning of fossil fuels. |
| fossil fuels | coal, oil, and natural gas which are burned and used as energy such as electricity. |
| prey | an animal that is hunted for food. |
