thorax middle body region, consisting of three fused main segments to which, in many arthropods the legs and wings are attached.
abdomen bears additional legs and contains digestive structures and the reproductive organs.
cephalothorax the thorax region fused with the head into a single structure.
appendage structures that grow and extend from an animal's body.
molting shedding the exoskeleton
mandible mouth parts of most arthropods include a pair of appendages that can be adapted for biting and chewing.
tracheal tube branch into smaller and smaller tubules
book lung saclike pockets with highly folded walls for respiration.
spiracle openings on the outside of the body.
Malpighian tubule help terrestrial arthropods preserve water in their bodies to maintain homeostatic water balance.
pheromone chemicals secreted by many animal species that influence the behavior of other animals of the same species.
cheliped has large claws adapted to catch and crush food.
swimmeret short legs behind the walking legs.
chelicera are adapted to function as fangs or pincers and often are connected to a poison gland.
pedipalp used for sensing and holding prey.
spinneret in spiders the structure that spins silk from a fluid protein secreted by their glands.
metamorphosis a series of major changes from a larval form to an adult form.
pupa is a non feeding stage of metamorphosis in which the animal changes from larval form into the adult form.
nymph the immature form of insects that look like small adults without fully developed wings.
caste group of individuals within a society that perform specific tasks.
