| book lung | in spiders and some other arthropods, the respiratory structure with highly folded walls whose membranes look like book pages |
| cephalothorax | in arthropods, the structure formed from the thorax region fused with the head |
| Malpighaian tubule | in most arthropods, the waste-excreting structure that also helps maintain homeostatic water balance |
| mandible | in most arthropods, one of a pair of mouthparts adapted for biting and chewing food. |
| molting | in arthropods, the periodic shedding of the protective exoskeleton so their bodies can continue to grow |
| pheromone | chemical secreted by an animal species to influence the behavior of other members of the same species |
| spiracle | opening in the arthropod body through which air enters and waste gases leave |
| tracheal tube | in most terrestrial arthropods, one of a system of tubes that branch into smaller tubules and carry oxygen throughout the body. |
| chelicera | one of a pair of arachnid appendages modified to function as fangs or pincers |
| cheliped | in most crustaceans, the first pair of legs, which has large claws to trap and crush food. |
| pedipalp | one of a pair of arachnid appendages used to study inheritance patterns of a trait through several generations and that can be used to predict disorders in future offspring. |
| spinneret | in spiders, the structure that spins silk from a fluid protein secreted by their glands |
| swimmeret | crustacean appendage used as a flipper during swimming |
| caste | specialized group of individuals in an insect society that perform specific tasks |
| metamorphosis | in most insects, the series of changes from a larval form to an adult form |
| nymph | immature form of an insect during incomplete metamorphosis-the hatchling looks like a small adult insect and goes through several molts, eventually becoming a mature winged adult |
| pupa | nonfeeding stage of complete metamorphosis in which the inset changes from the larval forms to the adult form |
| thorax | middle body region of an arthropod consisting of three fused main segments that may bear legs and wings |
