| community | a group of interdependent organisms of different species growing or living together in a specified habitat |
| consumer | an organism that consumes other organisms for food |
| decomposer | an organism that helps break down and decay the wastes of living of living organisms |
| ecology | the study of the relationships among living and non-living parts of an area |
| ecosystem | all the living and non-living parts in an area |
| energy pyramid | a diagram that compares the amount of energy available at each position, or level in the feeding order |
| food web | a combination of all the food chains in a community |
| habitat | the place where a species lives |
| niche | the role of a species in an ecosystem |
| photosynthesis | the process by which plants use sunlight to make sugar from water and carbon dioxide |
| food chain | the order that organisms feed |
| omnivore | eats both meat and grasses, trees and other plants |
| carnivore | eats meat |
| herbivore | eats grasses, trees and other plants |
| population | all of the members of one specie that live in the same area |
| producer | an organism that uses sunlight to make sugar from water and carbon dioxide |
| scavenger | animal that feeds on the dead bodies of organisms |
