What are some forms of nonverbal communication? Gestures,body movements,use of touch, and physical appearance.
What are some E-mail advantages? Fast, efficient. Provides record. Can improve communication and continuity of care.
What are some E-mail disadvantages? Risk to client confidentiality. Socioeconomics May not enhance communication
What factors influence the communication process? 1)Development 2)Gender 3) Values and perceptions 4)Personal space
Intimate space measurement? touching to 1 1/2 feet
What are some examples of when nurses would be in the intimate space? Cuddling a baby. Touching the sightless client. Positioning Clients. Observing an incision. Restraining a toddler for an injection
What is the personal space measurements? 1 1/2 feet to 4 feet.
What are some examples of when nurses would be in a client's personal space? Nurse is sitting with a client. Giving client medications. Establishing an intravenous infusion
What is the social space measurement? Describe. 4 to 12 feet. Characterized by a clear visual perception of the whole person. Body heat and odor are imperceptible, eye contact is increased, and vocalizations are loud enough to be overheard by others.
What are some examples of when nurses would use social space? When nurses make rounds or wave a greeting to someone.
What is the public space measurement? Describe. 12-15 feet. requires loud, clear vocalizations with careful enunciation. Although the face and forms of people are seen at a public distance, the perception is of the group of people or the community.
What are Factors influencing the communication process? Territoriality, Roles and Relationships, Environment, Interpersonal Attitudes, Congruence and Boundaries.
Therapeutic communication consists of what two components? Active listening, and physical attending.
What are the four components of the nurse-client relationship? Pre-interaction phase. Introductory Phase. Working Phase. Termination Phase
Describe the pre-interaction phase. Reviews pertinent assessment data and knowledge, considers potential areas of concern, and develops plan to interaction.
Describe the introductory phase. Opening the relationship, clarifying the problem, structuring and formulating the contract, getting acquainted, and developing trust.
Describe the working phase. Exploring and understanding thoughts and feelings. (concreteness,respect,confrontation,genuine, and empathetic listener.) Facilitating and taking actions. (goals)
Describe the termination phase. Client and nurse accept feeling of loss. Client accepts end of relationship without feeling of anxiety or dependence.
