| carnivores | Organisms that consume meat only |
| omnivore | Organisms that consume plants and meat |
| decomposer | Breaks down decaying matter |
| detritivore | Decomposer, returns nutrients to ecosystem |
| food chain | Displays feeding relationships |
| food web | Interconnecting food chains |
| biogeochemical cycle | Cycling of substances between biotic and abiotic parts of ecosystem |
| nutrients | Chemical needed to live and grow |
| nitrogen fixation | Conversion of atmospheric nitrogen |
| denitrification | Removal of nitrogen from ammonia |
| evaporation | Water liquid to gas |
| transpiration | Water from plants to atmosphere |
| primary productivity | Rate of producers making food |
| limiting nutrient | Nutrient in short supply versus others |
