Vocabulary about Biodiversity

TermDefinition
biodiversity The number and variety of species. It can help maintain stability in a system and help it recover from distrubance.
biomes Characteristic types of environments that occur in different conditions of temperature and precipitation.
Tropical rainforests Environments that occur where rainfall is abundant (more than 200 cm. in one year) and temperatures are warm to hot all year long. The soil in this environment is thin, acidic, and nutrient poor yet it is species rich.
deciduous loosing leaves seasonally
extinction disappearance of a species from all parts of its geographical range
invasive species plants and animals that have migrated to areas where they did not originate; often displace native species by outcompeting them for resources
endangered species a species whose numbers are so small that the species is at risk of extinction
Extirpation The disappearance of a particular population from a given area, but not the entire species globally
Endangered Species Act 1973 Act which prohibits importing or trading products made from threatened or endangered species from being bought, sold, captured, or killed. Also requires the development of plans to save endangered species.
natural resource anything in the environment that is used by people
habitat destruction the major cause of extinction; the loss of natural habitat
