testes the gamete producing organs of the male reproductive system
seminiferous tubule tightly coiled tubles inside the compartments of the testes
scrotum external sac
epididymis a long, coiled tubule that is closely attached to the testes
vas deferens a duct that extendes the epididymis
seminal vesticle lie between the bladder and the rectum that produce a fluid rich in sugars the sperm uses for energy
prostate gland located just below the bladder, secretes and alkaline fluid that neutralizes the acids in the female reproductive system
bulbourethral gland secretes an alkaline fluid that neutralizes traces of acidic urine in the uretha
semen a fluid made of sperm and the secretions
penis the organ that deposits sperm in the female reproductive system
ejaculation the process in which semen is forcefully expelled from the penis by contractions of the smooth muscles that line the uretha
ovary the gamete producing organs of the female reproductive system
fallopian tube a tube that contracts rhythmically to move a mature egg down the tube
uterus a hollow, muscular organ about the size of a small fist
cervix the lower entrance to the uterus
vagina a muscular tube that recieves sperm from the penis
vulva the external structures of the female reproductive system
labium folds of skin and mucous membranes that cover and protect the opening to the female reproductive system
ovum the mature egg
ovarian cycle the series of events in which the female reproductive system prepares and releases an ovum
menstrual cycle prepares the uterus for a possible pregnancy
follicular phase phase begins when the hypothalamous secretes a releasing hormone that stimulates the anterior pituary secret FSH (follicle stimulating hormone)
follicle a layer of cells that surrounds an immature egg
ovulation the release of an egg from a ruptured follicle
corpus lutheum a structure formed when cells of the ruptured follicle grow larger and fill the cavity of the follicle
luteal phase when the cells form the corpus lutheum
menstration the stage of the menstrual cycle in which the lining begins to slough off becuase of a lack of estrogen and progestron
menopause when a women stops menstrating due to no more follicles
