| 91. species | a group of organisms of the same kind that can mate and produce fertile offspring |
| 92. mutation | a permanent change in the base pair code of an organsim's DNA; can be helpful, harmful, or have not effect on the organism |
| 93. diversity | when there are many different kinds of something. |
| 94. natural selection | a process in which organsims with traits most suited to their environment survive at higher rates and pass on their traits to their offspring. |
| 95. adaptation | a trait that helps an organism survive in its environment |
| 96. evolution | a process by which the genetic makeup of a population or species changes over time. Usually the change is gradual. One example is a horse's hoof - fossil records show that horses once had 3 toes! |
| 97. Charles Darwin | Scientist who first proposed his theory about evolution and natural selection, based on his observations of organisms in the Galapagos Islands. |
| 98. extinction | when a species completely dies out or disappears |
| 99. fossil | remains of an organism (like bones, footprints, or imprints) that have become solid rock; used to study extinct species and to see how species change over time. |
| 100. radioactive dating (absolute dating) | a method of determining the age of a fossil by measuring the amount of certain radioactive components and knowing how fast these chemicals decay. |
