BI 114 Exam 1; Part2

Chapter 3; Tables and graphs

TermDefinition
operculum a protective covering over the gills in fish
gills an organ (as of a fish) for obtaining oxygen from water
gill filaments what the gills are made of, which serve to increase the surface area; this allows maximum exposure to the oxygen-laden water environment
tables values of the same type are listen down a column instead of across a row
tables only important data are entered (data showing no key differences are often omitted)
tables column headings include units, if needed
tables in a formal scientific report, they are numbered consecutively
tables the title is clear, concise, and shown at the top; it is enough information to stand alone and to be understandable apart from the rest of the report; often the first word and other important words are capitalized; no period
tables can be used when there are large numbers of data points to be displayed, and/or when there is more than one dependent variable to be displayed
graphs accurate and easy to read/understand
graphs can be constructed using graph paper and ruler, or using software, but should no be constructed freestyle by hand
graphs independent variable is typically shown on the x axis and dependent variable is typically shown on the y axis
x axis abscissa
y axis ordinate
graph range is determined so that 'wasted space' is minimal
graphs axes are labeled with appropriate units
graphs title contains enough information to stand alone and to be understandable apart from the rest of the report; only the first word is capitalized; has a period
graphs along with photographs, drawings, and diagrams, these are referred to as a figure (or part of a figure) in a formal scientific report; figures are numbered consecutively through the report
graphs allow someone to visualize the relationship between variables (independent and dependent); this can help in seeing trends in the data that could be difficult to detect otherwise

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
