Information from Biology MD 12 on Anthropoda

QuestionAnswer
Exoskeleton A body covering, typically of chitin, that provides support and protection
Molt To shed an outer covering so it can be replaced with a new one
Thorax Body region between the head and the abdomen
Abdomen Body region posterior to the thorax
Cephalothorax Body region composed of the head and thorax fuzed together
Compound Eye An eye made of man lenses, each with a very limited scope
Simple eye An eye with only one lense
Open Circulatory System A circulatory system that allows the blood to flow out of the blood vessels and into various body cavities so that the cells are in direct contact with the blood
Statocyst Organ of balance in a crustacean
Gonad General term for the gamete-producing organ
Complete Metamorphosis Insect development consisting of 4 stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult
Incomplete Metamorphosis Insect development consisting of 3 stages: egg, nymph, adult
Characteristics of Anthropoda Exoskeleton, Body Segementation, Jointed Appendages, Ventral Nervous System, Open Circulatory System
The largest anthropods are in class: Crustecea
Anthropoda Divisions Head, Thorax, Abdomen
"Anthropoda" means "Joint-Footer" (Because of muscles UNDER skeleton)
What kind of head does the Crayfish have? A cephalothorax covered with a plate called a carapace
Crayfish Anatomy Walking legs, Swimmerets, Uropods+Telson, Chilipeds, Antennules, Antennae
Crayfish Respiration 2 sets of gills to take in/release gases, gill chambers to allow water to gils. Use swimmerets+maxillae to circulate water.
Crayfish Circulation Heart rests in pericardial sinus (cavity), blood falls into sternal sinus, passes gills (exchange gas) and green gland (cleans), back to pericardial sinus
Crustacean repair Regeneration
Crayfish Digestion Scavenger: uses mandibles to break, esophagus, stomach's anterior region grinds, posterior sorts to digestive glands or intestine
Crayfish Nervous System 2 ganglia, compound eyes, antennules/antennae, bristles all over, statocyst
Class Arachnida Characteristics 1. 4 pairs of walking legs 2. Cephalothorax 3. 4 pairs of simple eyes 4. No antennae 5. Respiration through book lungs
What is a spiracle? Slit in a Arachnid's abdomen that allows air through
Class Chilopoda Centipedes--poisonous, 1 leg per segment
Class Diplopoda Millipedes--docile, 2 legs per segment
Which class is the largest? Class Insecta
Class Insecta Characteristics 3 pairs of walking/jumping legs, usually have wings at some stage, 1 pair of antennae, 3 segments: head, thorax, abdomen
Types of Wings Membranous: thin, transparent, network of veins. Scaled: delecately scaled. Leather-like: appear like exoskeleton. Horny: tougher than leather-like and cover whole insect
Insect Respiration No respiratory system, instead have interconnecting tracheas. C
Insect Circulation Relieves of waste (through Malpighian tubules) and delivers food
Insect Eyes Simple (see light) and compound (vision)
Insect Feeding Usually mandible, have gastic ceca make enzymes

Wings in Order Lepidoptera Scaled
Differences between moth and butterfly Butterfly's antennae straight, knobbed. Moth's antennae feathery. Butteryfly's body slimmer. Moth's body fatter. Butterfly's resting wings held vertically. Moth's held horizontally.
What chemical is used in mothballs? Napthalene
Wings in Order Hymenoptera Membranous
Order Hymenoptera Characteristics "Social insects" usually have stingers
3 Types of Bees Queen (reproductive female), worker (non-reproductive female), drone (male)
What kind of ants have wings? Only reproductive
