QuestionAnswer
sound produced as superheated air expands and contracts due to a lightning bolt.
 Thunder
a tornado or lesser whirlwind occurring over water and resulting in a funnel-shaped whirling column of air and spray.
 Waterspout
the largest hurricane threat; when hurricane force winds drive a mound of ocean water toward costal areas where it washes over land.
 Storm Surge
violent downdrafts that are concentrated in a local area.
 Downbursts
a self sustaining storm with rotating updrafts that can take 10-20 minutes to reach the top of the cloud with wind speeds as strong as 240 km/hr.
 Super Cell
classification of hurricanes according to wind speed, potential for flooding in terms of the effect of sea level and the potential for property damage. Ranging in category from 1-5, with 5 being the most severe.
 Saffir Simpson Scale
a scale that ranks tornadoes according to their path of destruction, wind speed and duration. Ranges from F-0 to F-5, with F-5 being the most severe.
 Fujita Scale
the distance wind travels over the open water surface.
 Fetch
snowfall which is enhanced on the west side of Michigan and New York due to the presence of lakes which border these states. 
 Lake Effect Snow
transfer of electricity generated by the rapid rushes of air in a cumulonimbus cloud.
 Lightning
a severe tropical cyclone having winds greater than 74 miles per hour; originating in the equatorial regions; traveling north, northwest, or northeast from its point of origin, and usually involving heavy rains.
 Hurricane
a severe snow storm characterized by strong sustained winds of at least 35 mph and lasting 3 hours or more.
 Blizzard
a form of turbulent weather characterized by lightning and thunder.
 Thunderstorm
a violent whirling column of air in contact with the ground.
 Tornado
