| Rock | a naturally formed solid that is usually made up of one or more types of minerals |
| Rock Cycle | the set of natural, repeating processes that form, change, and break down |
| Igneous Rock | rock that forms as molten rock cools and becomes solid |
| Sedimentary Rock | rock formed as pieces of older rock get pressed together and rebuild layers |
| Metamorphic Rock | rock formed when heat or pressure causes rock to change structure, texture, and mineral composition |
| Intrusive Rock | igneous rock that forms as magma cools below the Earth’s surface |
| Extrusive Rock | igneous rock that forms as lava cools on the Earth’s surface |
| Sediment | solid materials carried by water or air that settle in a body of water or on the ground |
| Metamorphism | when a rock’s structure of mineral composition is changed by heat or pressure |
| Recrystallization | when bonds between the atoms in minerals break and re-form in new ways |
| Foliation | the arrangement of minerals within rocks into flat or wavy parallel bands; a characteristic of most metamorphic rocks |
