| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Producer | An organism that uses solar energy to produce food. |
| Primary Consumer | A first level organism that eats a producer. |
| Secondary Consumer | An organism that eats a primary consumer. |
| Tertiary Consumer | An organism that eats a secondary consumer, usually a carnivore. |
| Consumer | An organism that must eat another organism to obtain energy. |
| Apex Predator | An organism that has a large number of prey items but does not have any predators. |
| Herbivore | An organism that only eats plants. |
| Omnivore | An organism that eats plants and animals. |
| Carnivore | An organism that eats only animals. |
| Autotroph | An organism that can produce it's own food through photosynthesis. |
| Heterotroph | An organism that must eat another organism for energy. |
| Food Web | A complex diagram showing all the possible paths of energy from producer to consumer. |
| Food Chain | A simple diagram showing one path of energy from producer to consumer. |
| Energy Pyramid | A triangle shaped diagram showing the movement of energy from producer to consumer, and shows the relative amount of energy at each trophic level. |
| Biomass | The amount of a living organism at any trophic level. |
| Primary Succession | The process of rebuilding an ecosystem after total destruction such as a volcanic eruption. |
| Secondary Succession | The process of rebuilding an ecosystem after a major disturbance such as a forest fire. |
| Pioneer Species | The first species to inhabit a destroyed ecosystem, such as bacteria that are first to colonize a new volcanic island. |
| Climax Community | The final product of either type of succession. |
| Mutualism | A relationship between two organisms in which both organisms benefit, such as a flower and a bee. |
| Parasitism | A relationship between two organisms in which one species is benefited while the other species is directly harmed, such as a dog and a tick. |
| Commensalism | A relationship between two organisms in which one species is benefited and the other species is neither benefited or harmed, such as whales and barnacles. |
| Predation | A process by which one animal hunts, kills and eats another animal. |
| Competition | Two or more organisms/species that try to obtain the same limited resource, such as seals fighting for females. |
| Prey | The animal that is hunted, killed and eaten during predation. |
| Predator | The animal that hunts, kills and eats prey. |
