heterotrophs organism that obtains energy by eating other organisms (plants and animals)
mutualism a symbiotic relationship where both species benefit
communities the different populations that live together in a defined area
autotrophs makes their own food through photosynthesis
herbivore eats only plants
abiotic Non-living factors in an ecosystem
biotic Living factors in an ecosystem
parasitism symbiotic relationship where one organism is helped and the other is harmed
niche The 'Job" of an organism in an ecosystem
species group of organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring
population group of individuals of the SAME species that live in the same area
symbiosis relationship in which 2 species live closely together
ecology scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment
biomes group of ecosystems that have the same climate and communities
commensalism symbiotic relationship in which one species benefits and the other is neither helped or harmed
detritivores eats dead material
biosphere part of earth in which life exists including land, water, and air
trophic level Each step in a food chain
ecosystem all the organisms that live in place, with the nonliving environment
omnivore eats both plants and animals
