genus is a group of similar species in the biological classification
family a rank in the biological taxonomy of all organisms
order A condition of logical or comprehensible arrangement among the separate elements of a group
class well-known ranks are life, domain, kingdom, phylum, order, family, genus, and species
phylum is a taxonomic rank below kingdom and above class
kingdom kingdom is a taxonomic rank, which is either the highest rank or in the more recent three-domain system, the rank below domain
domain a system for classifying biological organisms. Under this system, organisms are classified into three domains and six kingdoms.
biological species the systematic categorization of organisms into a coherent scheme.
phylogeny the development or evolution of a particular group of organisms
convergent evolution a process in biology. It occurs when two species from unrelated lines develop the same traits or features.
analogous character similar in some respects, allowing an analogy to be drawn
cladistic classification of organisms based on the branchings of descendant lineages from a common ancestor
ancestral character a character inherited from a common ancestor
derived character a trait that arose in the most recent common ancestor of a particular lineage and was passed along to its descendants
cladogram A branching, treelike diagram in which the endpoints of the branches represent specific species of organisms
evolutonary A gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form.
systomatics the study of the diversification of living forms, both past and present, and the relationships among living things through time

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
