Seasons | Each of the four divisions of the year (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) marked by particular weather patterns and daylight hours. |
Direct Light | Illumination on a subject or area that goes directly from the front of the luminance in a straight line to the subject. |
Indirect Light | reflected or diffused light, used especially in interiors to avoid glare or shadows. |
Earth's Tilt | The tilt of Earth's axis of about 23.5 degrees. |
Orbit | The curved path of a celestial object or spacecraft around a star, planet, or moon, esp. a periodic elliptical revolution. |
Revolution | the action by a celestial body of going round in an orbit or elliptical course; also : apparent movement of such a body round the earth. |
Axis | An imaginary line about which a body rotates: "the earth revolves on its axis once every 24 hours". |
Rotation | The action of rotating around an axis or center: "in the same direction as the earth's rotation". |
Solstice | Either of the two times in the year, the summer solstice and the winter solstice, when the sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the amount of daylight hours. |
Equinox | The time or date (twice each year) at which the sun crosses the celestial equator, when day and night are of equal length (about 12 hours). |
Moon Phases (Space View) | Half of the moon is dark, and half is light, depending on what part of it is facing the sun. |
Moon Phases (Earth View) | How the moon looks changes, depending on how much of the illuminated side of the moon is facing the Earth. |
Gibbous | Having the observable illuminated part greater than a semicircle and less than a circle. |
Crescent | The curved sickle shape of the waxing or waning moon. |
Waxing | Have a progressively larger part of its visible surface illuminated, increasing its apparent size. |
Waning | Have a progressively smaller part of its visible surface illuminated, so that it appears to decrease in size. |
