Mass Movement Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Mass Movement | The process of rock, snow, soil, or other material moving downhill |
| Angle of Repose | The steepest angle, or slope, at which loose material no longer moves downhill |
| Landslide | When a large amount of rock and soil moves suddenly and rapidly downhill |
| Heavy Rains | This makes soil wet and heavy, which makes it more likely to move downhill |
| Deforestation | The cutting down of trees, which can cause landslides because tree roots help to hold soil in place |
| Earthquakes | The shaking of the ground that can make mass movement more likely |
| Slump | When a block of material moves downhill along a curved surface |
| Rock Fall | When loose rock falls moves quickly down a steep slope |
| Mudflow | The rapid movement of a mixture of soil and water downhill |
| Lahar | The movement of water, soil, and ash caused by a volcanic eruption |
| Creep | The very slow movement of material downhill |
| Gravity | The force that causes all material to move downhill |
