Global Warming

Evidence, Causes, Impacts and action for Global Warming.

QuestionAnswer
Define Global Warming: The increase of average temperature over a period of time for the globe.
Define Climate Change: A significant alteration in the weather over a period of several years.
Name three piece of evidence studied to do with climate Change: CO2 (Ice Cores) and Temperature records. Dendrochronology (Study of tree rings). Peat Bog pollen content.
Explain how temperature records show evidence of global warming: Temp records using THERMOMETERS over the past 150 years show am average increase of temp of 0.8degrees c. Which is very significant for the time period. Ice cores show that the temp and CO2 levels fluctuate over a long period of time, not short like now.
Dendrochronology / Dendroclimatology: This is the study of the size and quality of tree rings to obtain data about the conditions the tree was growing in at a certain time.
How does evidence from Dendrochronology suggest global warming? Why is this evidence unreliable? As tree rings are larger and larger over the warmer months, this suggests an increase of global temperature. However it is unreliable because tree growth rate depends on many different factors.
Name 4 major greenhouse gases: Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), NO2 and H2O gas.
Give two sources of Methane in the Atmosphere: Cattle produce it as a waste gas. So removing forests to rear cattle removes a SINK for a Production of Methane. Decomposing Material.
Give some sources of CO2: Burning of Trees, burning fossil fuels, erosion of coastal rocks, Car emissions.
Why is increasing Greenhouse gases concentration linked to global warming? Increased Greenhouse effect (the suns energy is reflected back to earth more).
Name three studied effects of Global Warming: Temperature Change (enzyme Action). Rainfall Change. Seasonal Cycle Changes.
Describe the effect Temperature change will have on organisms: Enzyme action will alter as some species will have faster metabolisms and others will have slower. Those who are not adapted to the new temperature will have to move or face possible eradication. This alters species distribution and abundance.
Describe the effect of changing rainfall patterns on organisms: Changing the rainfall patterns will alter the Life Cycles of some organisms (such as plants that are dormant during dry periods and Mosquitoes and their breeding pools), it will also alter distribution (by desertification) and abundance of species.
Describe the effect of Seasonal Cycles changing on organisms: The seasons will begin to change at different times than species are used to, this will alter the flowering times and some species will not become active until after their optimal feeding period. Also the migration cycles may cause some to miss vitaltimes
