fuel A material that is burned for energy.
groundwater Water that is held in rocks and soil below the ground.
humus Decayed plant and animal material in soil. Humus makes soil look dark.
igneous rock A rock that forms when melted rock cools and hardens.
metamorphic rock A kind of rock that has been changed by heating and squeezing.
mineral A solid, nonliving substance found in nature.
natural resource A material on Earth that is necessary or useful to people.
nonrenewable resource A resource that cannot be replaced or reused easily.
pollution What happens when harmful materials get into water, air, or land.
renewable resource A resource that can be replaced or used again and again.
rock A nonliving material made one or more minerals.
sediment Tiny bits of weathered rock or once-living animals and plants.
sedimentary rock A kind of rock that forms from layers of sediment.
soil A mixture of minerals, weathered rocks, and decayed plant and animal matter.
solar energy Energy from the sun.
