Plate Tectonics

QuestionAnswer
What is plate tectonics? the theory that Earth's lithosphere is divided into "plates" that move around on top of the asthenosphere
What is boundary? the edge
What is convergent boundary? where tectonic plates are colliding
What is divergent boundary? where tectonic plates are being pulled apart
What is transform boundary? where plates are sliding horizontally against one another
What is compression? stress created when tectonic plates are colliding, moving into one another, squeezing
What is tension? stress created where there is pull, forces act to stretch
What is folding? bending of rock layers due to stress
What is fault? a break in a body of rock
What is folded mountains? mountains created when rock layers are compressed and pushed upward
What is an example of folded mountains? Appalachian Mountains
What is fault-block mountains? mountains created when tension causes large blocks of Earth's crust to drop down relative to other blocks
What is an example of fault-block mountains? Great Tetons
What is volcanic mountains? volcanic mountains that are located on convergent boundaries where rock is subducted, melted and becomes magma that erupts to form a volcano
What is an example of volcanic mountains? Andes Mountains
What is uplift? rising of regions to higher elevations
What is subsidence? sinking of regions of Earth's crust to lower elevations
What is seismology? the study of earthquakes
What are seismic waves? waves of energy that travels away from earthquake in all directions through Earth
What are P waves? seismic waves that cause particles of rock to move in a back and forth direction
Is P waves or S waves faster? P waves
Why are P waves faster than S waves? they travel through solids, liquids and gases
Why are S waves slower than P waves? S waves cannot travel through area that is completely liquid
What are S waves? seismic waves that cause rock particles to move in a side-to-side direction
What is epicenter? a point on Earth's surface directly above earthquake's starting point
What is hypocenter? a point along fault at which first motion of earthquake occurs

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
