| inference | use the clues from the reading plus what you know to fingure out what is not directly stated |
| context clues | words and sentences you use to figure out the meaning of words |
| cause | event or action that makes something happen |
| author's purpose | why the author wrote the passage |
| compare | pointing out similarities |
| contrast | pointing out differences |
| details | help to support and prove main idea |
| effect | the result of what happened |
| tone | attitude the author takes in a passage |
| fact | something that is true and can be proven |
| opinion | someone's belief about a topic or how they feel and cannot be proven |
