Biology MD 10

Information from Biology Module 10 on Ecology

QuestionAnswer
Ecology The study of the interactions between living and nonliving things
Population Group of interbreeing organisms coexisting together
Community Group of populations living and interacting in the same area
Ecosystem Assosiaction of living organisms and their physical environment
Biome Group of ecosystems classified by climate and plant life
Promary Consumer Oranism that eats producers
Secondary Consumer Organism that eats primary consumers
Tertiary Consumer Organism that eats secondary consumers
Energy is lost... each time energy moves up a trophic level in an ecosystem
How is Energy lost? Through cellular respiration (heat) and unused parts of prey (decomposed)
Ecological Pyramid Diagram that shows the biomass of organisms at the trophic level
Biomass Measure of the total dry mass of organisms within a particular region
The Clownfish+SeaAnemomne Mutualism Anemone protects clownfish from predators. Clownfish attracts food for and protects Anemone.
The BlindShrimp+Goby Mutualism Goby warns shrimp about predators. Goby uses hole (dug by shrimp) to hide.
The OrientalSweetlips+Blue-StreakWrass Mutualism Sweetlips has teeth cleaned. Wrasse get food.
Describe the Physical Environment All nonliving things in the ecosystem
Important Elements to Ecology Water, Carbon, Oxygen, Nitrogen
Precipatation... Can evaporate back to clouds; can be absorbed by plants; can be transpired
Transpiration Evaporation of water from the leaves of a plant
Watershed Ecosystem where all water runoff drains into a single body of water
Describe Groundwater Water flowing beneath land's surface
Watershed water comes... Through precipatation
Watershed water leaves... Through transpiation, evaporation, stream flow
Oxygen is used up... Through ozone formation, rusting(metals+minerals), fire, respiration
Oxygen is restored... Ozone destruction, watervapor destruction, photosynthesis
Plant photosynthesis... uses oxygen
Carbon cycle tracks... Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
What forms CO2 Decomposition, Respiration
CO2 enters air... Through decomposers, respiration, burning
CO2 is removed from air... Through photosynthesis, dissolved and used in ocean
Greenhouse effect Process by which certain gases, principally water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane, trap head taht would otherwise escape the earth and radiate back into space
Why Global Warming Scar Inexperienced people, one part of earth doesn't represent whole, political agenda, some evidence (but ignores 70%)
What is Nitrogen Fixation Process by which nitrogen gass is converted into chemically active molecules
How is Nitrogen Fixated? Physical environment (lightning), nitrogen fixing bacteria creating ammonia, nitrifying bacteria creating nitrates or nitrites
Ammonia NH3
What is Denitrification? Active nitrogen molecules put back as nitrogen gas

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
