Chapter 3
The Biosphere
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Ecology | is the scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment. |
| Biosphere | The combined portions of the planet in which all of life exists, including land, water and air or atmosphere. |
| Species | A group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring. |
| Populations | A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area. |
| Communities | Assemblages of different populations that live together in a defined area. |
| Ecosystem | A collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with thier nonlinving, or physical, environment. |
| Biome | A group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant communities. |
| Autotroph | These organisms use energy from the environment to fuel the assembly of simple inorganic compounds into complex organic molecules. |
| Producer | Organisms that can capture energy from sunlight or checmicals and use it to produce food from inorganic compouinds. |
| Photosynthesis | These organisms use light energy to power chemical reactions that covert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen rich carbohydrates such as sugars and starches. |
| Chemosynthesis | When organisms use chemical energy to produce carbohydrates. |
| Heterotrophs | Organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply. |
| Consumers | Organisms that relies on other organisms for its energy and food supply. |
| Herbivores | Obtain energy by eating only plants. |
| Carnivores | Organisms that obtain energy by eating animals. |
| Omnivores | Organisms that obtain energy by eating both plants and animals. |
| Detrivores | Organisms that feeds on plant and animal remains and other dead matter. |
| Decomposers | These organisms break down organic matter and obatin energy from them. |
| Food Chain | A series of steps in an ecosystem in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten. |
| Food Web | A network of complx interactions formed by the feeding relationships amoung the various organims in an ecosystem. |
| Tophic level | Step in a food chain or food web. |
| Ecological pyramid | A diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy or matter contained within each trophic level in a food chain or a food web. |
| Biomass | The total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level. |
