Earth Science Vocabulary Set 5

QuestionAnswer
Plate Tectonics A theory in which the Earth’s surface is made up of many plates that move relative to each other.
Divergent Boundary A place where Earth’s outer plates are moving or pulling away from each other. New crust is being created in these locations.
Convergent Boundary A place where Earth’s outer plates are moving towards each other or colliding. Crust can be deformed or destroyed in these locations.
Transform Boundary A place where Earth’s outer plates are sliding horizontally past one another.
Subduction The process in which one lithospheric plate slowly moves beneath another plate and descends into the mantle.
Oceanic Trench A long, deep depression in the ocean floor. These are the deepest areas in the oceans. These can be found near where an ocean plate slides under a continental plate. The deepest of these is the Mariana.
Mid-Ocean Ridge A continuous underwater mountain chain, which is actually the largest mountain chain in the world.
Rift Valley A depression in the earth’s crust created by lithospheric plates moving away from one another.
Richter Scale A scale that rates the magnitude of an earthquake.
Seismic Waves Shockwaves in solid rock from things such as earthquakes or underground explosions.
