Science Ch 8 Vocab

QuestionAnswer
ammeter a device used to measure the current in a circuit.
amperes unit for measuring electric current.
battery a combination of electrochemical cells connected together that produces a potential difference.
circuit diagram a drawing using symbols to represent the different components of a circuit.
current electricity the continuos flow of charge in a complete circuit.
electric circuit a complete a pathway that allows electrons to flow.
electric current the amount of charge passing a point in a conductor.
electric load any device that transforms electrical energy into other forms of energy, such as a light bulb, buzzer, heater and motor
electric potential energy electric energy stored in a battery
electric resistance the ratio of voltage to current
electrochemical cells electrodes in electrolytes that convert chemical energy stored in charges.
electrodes two terminals in a battery or other electricity source.
energy the ability to do work.
kinetic energy energy a moving object has because of particles in matter.
ohm the unit of measurement for electrical resistance.
ohmmeter a device that measures resistance.
Ohm’s law the mathematical relationship comparing voltage (V), current (I), and resistance (R), written as R=V/I
Potential difference the amount of electric potential energy per on coulomb of charge at one point in a circuit compared to the potential energy per coulomb of charge at another point in the circuit; also called voltage.
resistance the property of any material that slows down the flow of electrons and converts electrical energy into other forms of energy.
resistor an electrical component with a set amount of resistance that slows down current and transforms electrical energy into other forms of energy.
terminals the positive and negative end points of a battery.
volt the unit of potential difference
voltage the amount of electric potential energy per one coulomb of charge at one point in a circuit compared to the potential energy per coulomb at another point in the circuit.
Voltmeter a device that measures the amount of space taken up by a substance or object, usually measured in liters (L) or cubic centimeters.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
