| Order | The arrangement of people or things in relation to each other according to a particular sequence, pattern, or method |
| Reproduction | Allows for the passing of genetic traits from one generation to another; can be sexual or asexual |
| Growth and Development | The series of changes which organisms undergo in their passage from birth to maturity including an increase in size, number, value or strength |
| Energy Processing | Energy is used by organisms to do things, such as growing or moving; When they do these things energy is transferred from one substance to another or from one place to another |
| Response to the Environment | Action or movement due to the action of a stimulus in the environment |
| Regulation | Organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment in response to outside or environmental influences |
| Evolutionary Adaptation | The adjustment or changes in behavior, physiology, and structure of an organism to become more suited to an environment |
| Atom | Basic unit of matter |
| Molecule/Compound | The smallest particle of a substance that retains the properties of the substance and is comprised of two or more atoms |
| Tissue | A collection of similar cells and compounds acting together to perform one or more specific functions in the body |
| Organ | A collection of tissue joined in a structural unit to serve a common function |
| Organ System | Group of organs that work together to perform a specific function |
| Organism | Any living system; may be unicellular or made up of many cells, tissues, and organs |
| Population | Group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area |
| Community | Group of different populations that live together in a defined area |
| Ecosystem | A community and its nonliving surroundings |
| Biosphere | A living planet |
| Observation | The act of noticing and describing events or processes in an orderly way |
| Scientific Inquiry | The process that has the aim of solving a problem or resolving doubt |
| Quantitative Data | Data that can be quantified or manipulated, numbers |
| Qualitative Data | Data that characterizes but does not measure properties or attributes |
| Hypothesis | A scientific explanation for a set of observations that can be tested; either supported or rejected |
| Controlled Experiment | An experiment in which only one variable is changed |
| Variable | A factor whose value may vary or change in contrast to a constant whose value is fixed |
| Theory | A well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations and hypotheses; enables scientists to make accurate predictions |
| Compound Light Microscope | Uses lenses to focus light on a specimen; the lenses consist of an objective and an eyepiece |
| Dissecting Scope | A microscope with a low magnifying power; used to examine small plant or animal parts |
| Transmission Electron Microscope | A microscope that uses thin beams of electrons to examine thin slices of material; provides 2-D images of cellular structures |
| Scanning Electron Microscope | Uses beams of electrons to view the surface of a specimen; provides 3-D images of cellular structures |
