WCHS Biology Chapter 20

WordDefinition
Hypha threadlike filaments that are the basic structural units of multicellular fungi
Mycelium in fungi, a complex network of branching hyphae; may serve to anchor the fungus, invade food sources, or form reproductive structures
Chitin complex charbohydrate that makes up the cell walls of fungi
Haustoria in parasitic fungi, hyphae that grow into host cells and absorb nutrients and minerals from the host
Budding type of asexual reproduction in unicellular yeasts and some other organisms in which a cell or group of cells pinch off from the parent to form a new individual
Sporangium in fungi, a sac or case of hyphae in which spores are produced
Stolon fungal hyphae that grow horizontally along a surface and rapidly produce a mycelium
Rhizoid fungal hyphae that penetrate food and anchor a mycelium; secrate enzymes for extracellular digestion and absorb nutrients
Zygospore thick-walled spores of zygamycetes that can withstand unfavorable conditions
Gametangium structure that contains a haploid nucleus; formed by the fusion of haploid hyphae
Ascus tiny, saclike structures in ascomycetes in which ascospores develop
Ascopore sexual spores of ascomycetes fungi that develop within an ascus
Conidium chains or clusters of asexual spores
Basidium club-shaped hyphae of basidiomycete fungi that produce spores
Basidiospore spores produced in the basidiomycetes during sexual production
Mycorrhiza mutualistic relationship in which a fungus lives symbiotically with a plant
Lichen organism formed from a symbiotic association between a fungus, usually an ascomycete, and a photosynthetic green algae or cyanobacteria
Conidiophore in ascoymcetes, elongated, upright hyphae that produce conidiophores
